The takeaway

A headline bid can establish buyer interest. Your own opportunity still depends on what you can responsibly license and deliver.

The latest development: October 5–8

Reported transaction, still pending: Google’s $10 million bid for Spirit Airlines’ operational data received a consumer privacy ombudsman’s recommendation on October 5. Lawmakers raised employee-privacy concerns on October 8. Reporting describes passenger-data exclusions and third-party de-identification. A court hearing was scheduled for October 14; approval remained pending as of this article’s October 12 publication.

How to interpret the number

Our analysis: an unusual bankruptcy auction is not a pricing comparable for a typical Ohio business. Dataset scope, permitted uses, retained rights and preparation costs must be understood before comparing any two transactions. We do not treat the bid as a completed payout or use it to calculate our assessment categories.

Prepare a dataset boundary before a price conversation

Write down which systems and dates are in scope, which records must be excluded, and which permissions require review. Separate internal operating records from customer-supplied material and employee information. A proposed export should have a clear owner, an agreed review process and a documented purpose.

Our licensing discussion guide covers questions to take to the appropriate commercial and legal reviewers. Our valuation methodology explains the difference between an initial fit category and an actual offer.

Your next step

Check your data’s fit using a short description of your business and systems. An initial screen can help identify the next questions to investigate before exporting records or negotiating a license.
